Last time I camped up there the damn dog scoffed the sausages while I was making breakfast....

But getting to Morven might take a while.... Wiki says "Morven is a small village about 7 kilometres West of Culcairn in the eastern Riverina district of New South Wales, Australia. At the 2006 census, Morven had a population of 464 people" Setting the GPS right now....

The camp site is Glenview Caravan and Camping Site Strontian post code PH36 4HZ.

The site has toilet and shower facilities, electric hook up for softies :)

I have had no luck with our friends at the FC, however as said before i have identified one wee rough drive, though wont have time to check it out so I will go first lol, that said our landie sympathetic site owner is seeing if he can get us a wee run off road.

Look forward to seeing you all there after 12noon Friday 21st May.

Any questions pm or call.

Chris I thought about that, as we will be doing a bit of convoy driving once there it might be good road manners not to have a wee landie convoy up through Glen Coe.

And as wee dont/cant all go at the same speed could be chaos :) :) :) :).

Plenty time to get a blether when we get there.

Nice convoy of Landrovers with caravans going round Loch Lomond would be a right hoot ;D ;D especially around tthe bit before Ardlui, you can go first John, since you have the experience, me being a mere mortal and amateur will attempt to keep up :D :D

If theres enough space between everyone,[heres only 6 or 7 isnt there?], with the caravan at the front or rear, then convoy shouldnt be a problem-done it plenty times with the vintage car runs and they can be darned slower than an old Landy. Maybe an idea for mobile numbers, if theres a reception, to be swapped.

Just an idea .......... 8)

Have checked the ferry timetable and it seems the last ferry is 21.30 from the Nether Lochaber side. One before that is 21.10 and before that 20.45.

So I would think you have plenty time to catch the last one.

Fare are ?6.40 for the MEN & LADIES per Land Rover and for the wimps please add on another ?8.60 for their tin tents :D :D :D :D

I camp at least once a year in Glen Rosa on Arran and we cook all the food over log fires for the entire time we are there, there are lots of fallen trees around so no shortage of fuel just the energy to collect and chop it into suitable sizes.

Not the scouts, Boys Brigade for me could never get into the shorts ::) and the dib dib dob palava :D

3.5hrs? Whare do you live Doug?? When i went through to Oban last year for the ferry, it took me a couple of hours.

Just refered to the MAP :o :o, I'm on A91, then cut across onto A823 upto Crieff, along A85,to Crianlarich, join A82 to Tyndrum to meet everyone else....as Mr Meerkat would say....'simple'!!! ;D ;D

If leaving Friday, will leave early, or might go up night before and find somewhere to stay. Not decided on that one yet....i take it the meeting place is still Tyndrum?

I was thinking of leaving about 9am and stopping in Crieff at my Mums, free coffee and bacon buttie ;) ;) ;) then up to the "metal percussion instrument" for about 10.30 11.00 am

Is anybody bringing their cb's ?

Just sent my roof rack away to be galvanised, this was really cheap as I did it on the back of a local sheet metal company who are happy to let anybody drop off items basically you pay the weight of the item at the rate of ?400 per ton. Roof rack cost me less than ?30 SO A BARGAIN :D :D :D and they will retap the threads for a bit extra.
Have read the reviews of the site and it seems perfect for us must remember to order the skin so soft from Avon, "Ding dong Avon calling" as the wee midges do not like it and if I remember May and June are prime months for the midges
What sort of attachment apart from a bent pin would be needed for the fishing line to catch the tea incase my Harrods Food Hall purchase has not fully defrosted ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I will probably leave at 8 if its only me, and if Morag tags along it will be nearer lunchtime before I get away. (Its a long story)
Takes me 30 minutes to pick up the van.
If its only me then I think I will leave the van and bring the canvas, quite enjoy the camping but Morag prefers a bit more comfort.
She is still contemplating wheather to join us or not.

Dont know how you get your tribe to move at sparrow f**t John, I need two pun of semtex to get them out their pit

Subject to the traffic the "Black Beauty" should eat the road in about two hours, then depending on the ferry availability be on site 30 mins later.

Not sure what the law states about a 110, towing a caravan, towing a 110, towing a caravan ::) ::) just pray you get clear of the snaking road bits around the Loch, Plod would just love you for that. :)
Maybe we can catch up on SUnday at the GRR, maybe have a wee "committee" meeting"

On the CB front, I must confess I have three rigs but need to get shot of two. If you have problems then maybe we can fix them while we are up there. Its always best to have someone who can test with you, I can bring my swr and lecy kit and see where we get to.

On the way up we should try and establish connection suggest a channel and see where we get to. How about 7??

Get lost committee
Anti midge committee
Fire wood committee
Lighting fire committee
Going to pub committee
etc etc etc

If i get time i will get a cb but you know me will need help to instal.

Looks like I will be on my own so wondering about wisdom of van just for me...mind will be a good trial for Appleby following week :)

John I see you are very very very organised as you have your lunch already packed,  What have you got apart from tinned items that will last about 3 weeks in a poly bag  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Are you giving this talk to us as you think it should be adopted as a possible burial method for Land Rovers in the future, I have this picture in my mind now of about 20 folk around an old Landie instead of reading hymn books it will be LRO Int or Monthly and debating "should we get her a galvanised chassis or just light the match"  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Think metal percussion inst..... is a good place as the Green Smelly has a hhhhuuuuddddggggeeee carpark. It also serves the best Cullen Skink mmmmm   :D :D

We having the team huddle before or after the GRR

Are we coming up with a name for this weekend, thought it might be fun to get a few stickers done for the crew.

Does anyone have a big party size BBQ mine is only big enough to feed Doug so weather permitting be nice if we could get a big cook up rather than lots of small bbq going at once.

As we are allowed a camp fire on site i will bring with me kindling and a supply of logs to get us going,I have a bow saw but hasnt seen much use recently so if someone can bring one that be good, although drift wood makes for a great fire :).

Does everyone have camp chairs as I have a few and can bring extra if needed,I olso have lots of head torches but we probably wont need them as we shall all be in bed before dark ::)

Sorry for not being on to let you know costs but my first idea of something on the front and then something on the back, each one different, would be more expensive than the last fill up of the Discos tank today.

I admit I like Tommy's slogan idea with the addition of a Land Rover some where and I would be prepared to pay a slight bit extra and get a polo top.

This is the first camping weekend and I see this being an annual event so the tee/ polo shirt will be a treasured item for our grandchildren to put on ebay in the future. So if there is no further suggestions and if everybody is happy with Tommy's suggestion I will get definate quotations.

Prices were based on 25 tee shirts printed on front and back but all the same on each one, Foe tee shirts this was working out at ?11 each so a bit expensive.

Please let me know your thoughts.

The whole process will take two weeks from order to finish so we are getting close to a cut off date if we want something done.

You spoiled people with your BBQ's

If we are going to get in to pyromania :'( :'( then all we need to get is a decent fire, raid the council tip for the shelves out of old fridges or even better ovens and with a few strategically placed logs we can sit them over the fire.

Dont mind doing he cooking its the washing up that gets me.

I shall be in the council yard tomorrow and report back.

On the T shirts thanks for the comments but its still a bit of "Work in Progress" was hoping some of you smart folks would finish it off

I have a bow saw, needs a new blade, also will find and sharpen the hand axe, on the scrounge for a wee chain saw at the minute.

You might have guessed I have done this a few times.

Tommy that sounds good if you can cook over a live fire not embers, think in the old days pps just used front grills of the landies.

Dont worry about a saw as am sure me shed will produce something more than able for the job.

If not we can  get drift wood....me and Wendy used to drive the high tide every morning to collect wood when in our wee shore side cottage never bought coal all winter just drift and free peat...those were the days :D

Re the gazebo I use a 5 x 6 metre camo tarp strapped to the side of the land rover and three adjustable clothes poles plus a few guy ropes to secure.

Its a ideal cover and it can be rolled up and bungied to the roof rack in about 10 minutes

Polo Tops

Please all look at the following link for a guy who is very switched on and was very helpful in offering advice.

For the price of ?14.00 he can print our own sign on names on the front and then on the back put Tommy's slogan with the Land Rover cartoon in the middle of it.

He suggested that either white or grey would be best as they show up the print better.

 funtoontshirts.com/view-toon.php?toon=624

He would only take two days or so to do all the work and we could email him direct with our club names and pay so that would be easier than one person having to collect money rtc.

What is every bodies thoughts??????

If we want the cartoon drawn a bit better he could also do that for us.

Has anyone decided what logo to go for? I quite like the 1st one-has a good sound to it. Cartoon Landy great...as long's mine a 109 SW in Limestone ;D...fussy you know!!  ::) ;D
Grey polo shirt too-white sooo not a good colour with either Landrovers or dogs.... :o

Sorry to be a bit of a bore but the cartoon does nought for me, bit garish, but if the majority like it then fine go for it.

Probably best with the grey, at least it will last longer rather than a white one which will yellow with time.

There is a filling station at Glencoe village with well stocked shop and one at Ballahullish just after the bridge.
I am intending to contribute another ?100 to Tesco's in Perth and then top up at Glencoe village that should be good for the weekend for me.
This week I have filled the Disco up twice, suppose sleeping in on sunday and getting to the GRR did cost me dearly but the sound was fantastic, and last night in Inverness Tesco had no diesel for sale  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( so it was Morrisons at a cheap price of 120.9 hence the large drink.

After John's comment I thought I would plug the post code for the Strontian Hotel into the Petrol Price check web site.

It came back "No petrol stations in this area" ??? ???

Now that's a worry.

I think the Glencoe top up will be my chosen approach after filling to the neck at Aldi in Paisley.

Deisel in Greenock is at ?1 22.9 and thats Tesco, no competition so they charge what they like, theiving bar stewards >:( >:(

Straight vegetable oil. I've not tried it but theres a lot of folks who run older diesels on it...and another lot who warn of death and destruction if you do.
The other alternative is to make your own biodiesel. Fairly basic chemistry at room temperatures and pressures....you just need a shed ! The Govt even allow you to make 2500lt a year for personal use tax free. Might be the next thing on my list.

The final deal with polo tops is that if we are all happy with your slogan and a Land Rover cartoon on the back with our sign on names on the front then I will set up a deal with the shop on monday.
We would then be able to phone him and give him our details and pay at the same time
John has kindly offered to collect them

Will post a final pm on monday or tuesday if he is closed on the holiday monday. He did offer to change the cartoon of the Landy if we wanted something a bit better.

On the fuel subject I m a bit concerned John with your last comment  "If we get lost"   ??? ??? ??? ???

Thank you kind Sir.

It wont look like that for long, the courier will have a hernia by the end of the week carrying all the "goodies" up the stairs.

Just the ususal bits and bobs, at least he will not have to carry the roof rack, its in the metal shop being coated.

Just checked out the caravan hitch this am and apart from the Aux socket its ready to rock, being retired its "drop of the hat" and we are off.

This mention of Glentarkie got me thinking we must get back over there see if we can get round the bottom of the woods dont think many tried last time.

Back to the w/e I will have a fag in each hand going up the loch side steady the nerves, can some comp smart person check if the are any atms over there in case we spend to much on fuel at the bar :)

I need to buy a new battery for caravan I want good one but dont want to spend a fortune any recommendations,Halfords do one for?109.

I have a trade card for Halfords if that helps as you will get a discount.

From my memory there are no atm's and I think the last one is at the Green Smelly that we will pass

that is if we do not finish up at Fort Bill having missed the turn off  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Let me know about the trade card but if you let me know what type you need I will ask at Perthshire Caravans who are just down the road from me, also will tell you how much discount you will get from Halfords.

Thanks for that Chris, problem is I no nothing about tin tents so as to what battery is best I dont know but all it will have too do is power the lights fridge etc for a couple of nights now and then,as hook up available most places other than SLROC W/E ends
Title: Re: non club weekend tour caravan camping
Post by: coolcamper55 on May 04, 2010, 08:36:33 PM
Dont buy a battery from Halfords if you can help it.

I take it you are buying a Leisure battery and not a car battery. They are subtle differences and its all down to the charging and the retention of the charge. Leisure batteries are normally more expensive.

I bought a 110Ah battery for the van when I put the mover on the 80Ah would just about cope withe the van's needs but not the mover and the van. I did not toss away the 80Ah just hooked it up in parallel so I have nearly 190Ah capacity on the van.

I got mine off ebay about ?60 plus postage(it was covered with stamps :D :D)but definitely less than ?80

Try Towsure,or maybe Burnhouse Caravans down the A737 they seemed reasonable for caravan gear

One other possibility is Dingbro, the are supposed to be trade only but I am sure you can brassneck it. You can get a new battery for ?30 for a Peugot 206, Halfords are a tad more than that

Hope it helps,

Tommy

Doug & Tommy glad to see you have managed to secure time off/away for the weekend, however I also like the idea of the sunday night as well and come back monday

I mean if we are spending all that on fuel etc then might as well get the most out of it.

Do the same rates apply to the sunday night at the Strontian, real mens, Camp Site? John please note this as it is not called The Strontian Tin Tent Site just incase your paying by cheque you understand ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Just thought I would get us off the hot air topic as its getting a bit long winded. What I am looking for is a volunteer to write a short article on the w/e for the club news letter, this would be appreciated as the editor is always looking for contributions.

Of course any such article would have to take account of current libel laws and of course my good name.

Any takers

As it is my Mums birthday on Wednesday we always go to the Inn at Ardgour for her birthday lunch so I thought I would find answers to questions that have been previously asked,

ATM Yes there is one in Strontian it is a RBS and free when the shop is open
Diesel is available in Strontian but please note that the price today is ?1.35 per litre.
There are two very good shops in the village and one even does the lottery.

Diesel in Glencoe was costing ?1.28 per litre but at Ballahulish it was ?1.26

Now I realise that we are all responsible drivers but also I saw two gents with checkered caps hiding beside a large shed with a "hair dryer" in one of their hands, on the road out of Ardgour, made a comment on this and was told that this is a very regular occurance as people think they are away from the main roads so nobody is going to check up on them.
Did not get a chance to visit the site as was short of time but hope all the above helps with planning for all.
Title: Re: non club weekend tour caravan camping
Post by: freelandy1 on May 10, 2010, 08:16:25 PM
Think the hair dryer is for show only, the last I heard on "roadtrafficdefence.com" was that speed guns have been withdrawn from all scottish forces and can not be used to gauage speed. Still wouldn't risk it though

I dont think me 110 and caravan be doing much over 70mph on single track road.

No doubt we will be welcome but plod might try and catch us out so good road manners is all it takes.

Thats why if we convoy it would be a good idea after crossing ferry if we just went along in 2s 4min apart dont wont a convoy annoying locals

John, according to a few of my biker buddies, the biggest police risk is unmarked police sport bikes fitted with recorded gear. As you say, if everyone sticks to the law and don't cause convoy tail backs should be no issues.

Have to agree John on that point but it is a sixty on the road to Strontian ::) ::)

Think that depending on the ferry it would be good to maybe split up there however the owner of the Inn was telling me that it has not been a great season so far and all visitors very welcome. Also he thinks the site is up through a residential area at the back of the village past school so "in twos" would be a good idea there for sure at all times.

John have just checked but please confirm this

A class roads max speed for caravan/ trailer is 50mph
B Motorway or dual carriage way is 60 mph.

Please check but this was a relation of mine who tows his tin tent about all the time and is a retired "Checkered Hatman" although a time ago

Just to add to Doug's note,

Towing a braked trailer is 50MPH on A and B roads unless there is an overiding limit e.g. 40MPH and 60 MPH on motorway again unless there is an overiding limit e.g.50MPH

On all roads an "unbraked trailer" is limited to 50 MPH

Is anyone bringing a large barby? Tommy I think said he had organised something.

Chrisi whats happening with the shirts?

How many cb radios will we have?

Saddly I wont have time to go to Gemm to get my rock sliders fitted so be looking as shabby as ever ,however I might give the 110 a wash.

If its going to be nice and dry and if 90 gets new Mot might be tempted to come in it with yes wait for it ...............................a tent.

Just to answer a few wee points

Wood cutting etc.

I have a bow saw and a chain saw. I do not agree with cutting down trees but if there is fallen timber then thats a different matter, Drift wood is fine too especially if its been above high tide for a wee while, burns well no smoke either.

Cooking / BBQ

I have acquired three metal grids that can be placed over the fire, one of these is big enough to cook about a dozen steaks at once, all we need is the tongs etc to turn the food and save the fingers getting burnt.

CB Rigs

I will have mine on board fully functional, well it will be when I do it next week, dont expect any problems. Doug, bring yours with you and I promise I will get it sorted out. On the way up I will be sitting on channel 19 so give me a hollar, Coolcamper is my handle.

Is there anything else we need to sort out

That's a shame, that vogue is still sitting out there if your interested, I wouldn't have a petrol one myself, been there before with big engined cars and for a daily drive you soon see the cash going

POLO TOPS

Ok this is the situation. We are going with the "Tommy Design" on the back with the cartoon Landie in the middle of this. At the point of order we give our sign on name which will be printed on the front. Colour will be grey.

1 Phone to place and pay for your order on 0141 339 9652 saying you are part of the Land Rover fun week end and use my name to ensure that you are getting the correct shirt etc
2 Give your sign on name
3 Order must be placed by Tuesday 5pm as our "Leader" is collecting them on Thursday.

"Leader" I will pm you with collection details

Please phone me if I have not explained this correctly.

re the t shirts I tried through the Photobucket site as well maybe the site managed to get it through. I have had another email failure trying to send a note to one of the forum members regarding a radio license course it might be my pc.

If you have the link, its on the thread, try sending it from your machine.

On the other hand I might be able to come up with car stickers using mt PC and special adhesive backed paper. How many vehicles are there?
What colour are they? (I know that might be a problem for Doug ;) ;)). I can then get the text in the right colour for the vehicles then at least we have something.

Can each of the crew get back to me on this?

Tommy

Proposed Car Sticker its about 210mm wide and 60mm high, clear background and the text can be changed to suit the vehicle colour(http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab221/COOLCAMPER55/LRHP/Strontian_2copy.jpg)

Thats seems a good idea Tommy, Goddess-Limestone.

I'm not staying the Monday. Us self employed folk dont get paid when were off :(, and im off Friday, so thats enough!!!

Hope you get the Disco sorted in time Chris-how long does it take to throw a tent, sleeping bag,dog lead & dog and some grub into the back of a disco!!! :o

Oh, and the ones who arent tin-tenting it......I camped at Drumclog at the weekend and it was b****y FREEZING!!!!! :o :o :o
I have never been so cold even with 2 of the dogs sharing the duvet!!! (4 large dogs in a wee tent...not funny!! :D..) So word of advice..take some extra blankets!!

just went for a spin in the 90......hmm slight problem. i seem to have sprung a leak. the whole engine bay, front axle dripping with, i think, fluid rather than oil. theres also oil/grease coming from front offside onto the wheel. have had problem with power steering lately ie intermitent working although the fluid tank looks full. maybe coolant? could be dusting off the freebie and coming through in comfort at this rate

I was unable to get the design across to the T shirt guy, its either my PC or his email address, it keeps sending back failure messages.

Christopher is aware of the SOP perhaps he can pull it off yet.

I will keep an eye out for you on the way up just in case you have a spot of bother.

Rather tempted to follow your approach, I will have everything ready on Thurs night so once I get up have my coffee then head off. Depending when I reach Tyndrum, might decide to pull over otherwise will push on and maybe stop off somewhere for a cuppa.

Hi guys and gals,

The polo tops are still able to be produced BUT YOU all need to phone and place your orders by midday on  WEDNESDAY the details are already on he thread but I will list them again.

Phone Graham on 0141 339 9652 and tell him you are going on the Land Rover weekend. You need to pay ?15 when placing your order. Use my name when phoning him or phone me on my mobile 07989960134. Once you have ordered can you please pm me and confirm as I have to let John know if there is any to pick up

I have sent him the wording for the back and he is doing us a REAL favour in getting them ready for collection on thursday. When I phoned him today NOBODY had ordered one so this the last chance we have. Get phoning if you want one  :( :( :(

Weather looks as if it might be kind, unusual for any sort of landie outing so fingers x.

Off to bed early, caravan got essentials loaded except a few beers and some food.

Was a bit enthusiastic filling the 110 as I had fuel leaking for a while.

dno about freebie td4s getting cheaper....they went up in value over the winter. the old diesel engines pretty good as well from what i heard. its just the petrols to avoid. freebie diesel auto could do well. and bonus being over 100 inch wheelbase you are allowed a shunt ;) ;)

Ok I know you will all be tucked up in bed for a good nights sleep knowing that tonight there is no strange noises to disturb you ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Mel I am hoping to be in Crieff at about 9.00am but I have a bit of organisation to do so will be not be leaving till about 9.45/10.00am.

If you want to stop in for a coffee my Mums house is as folllows:

In Crieff as you follow A85 you will pass a Suzuki Garage on your left, dealer of the year two years running I would add, about 200 yds past this on your right you will see Craigard Road. Turn up, yep steepish hill, here and you will see "Monte", my name for the Disco, just over the first crossing you come to. mobile number 07989960134

Doug I am planning on being at Lochearnhead at about 10.30 if I am earlier I will wait as there is a large car park infront of some old garages on the right just past the the A85 junction.

Will put the cb on at Lochearnhead on ch 19 and will stop in for a bowl of the Cullen Skink at the Green Smelly.

Only half a sleep left now Monte packed and only the tyres to go on the roof and give her a drink at Tesco's to get my 5p off per litre tomorrow morning.

John can I be the first to ask are you organising another "Non Club Camping & Tin Tenting" weekend next year if not I propose that you have to as this is going to be some weekend ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

If you organise another weekend I will be the "scribe" for this one

Looking forward to seeing everybody there tomorrow either early or late

Have to agree with doug, I often have a peek on the various trader site to see what my year is selling at, mines is a 53 plate but first reg keeper was 030104? face lift es diesel auto with full service history and 40k on the clock. They average about 6.3k, mines has a few extra, half leather, drive lamps, park sens, window tint, s/s bars, nudge bar.I have a plan to replace the freelander though.

i sincerely hope this was the first of many ;D ;D

a huge thankyou to john for thinking of this and making it happen
the first time i have been to that area and it was absolutely stunning, they should have a road safety campaign up there, i couldnt keep my eyes on the road the scenery was superb. as for the weather 8) 8) who needs spain when you have strontian 8) 8)

the site was superb for us. very pleasant but rough round the edges, just like us :D

but what really made the weekend was the company. thank you to everyone there. have not had a better weekend. plenty chat, great to spend so much time with folk, really get to know people even more so than at the formal events which was the whole point of the weekend, chill out and relax. trust everyone got home safely? amazingly there was no breakdowns :o :o john i trust you didnt need to call the AA on your way home ;)

i went back about 8pm by the scenic route rather than the ferry and it was stunning. mind you might be investing in a bull bar....with the amount of deer on the road coming accross the moor i could have had a years supply of venison ;) just wish i was as quick with the camera, there was a few within 10 yards of the road :o

thanks again everyone and PLEASE can we have another soon

Yep, ditto, fab weekend. We'd make a great home removals team- tin tent unhitched and parked, Landies parked and tents pitched in no time...good team effort....many hands make light work!! :D

Great weather 8) 8), great company, great site, and a great run up. Goddess never missed a beat and she had her photo taken coming off the ferry by an admirer!!

Thanks to John for the organisation, and thanks to all for the company, chat and laughs. Looking forward to the next one. ;D ;D

Yep just have to agree with everybody else's comments about the weekend and a big thank you to John for thinking of such a brilliant idea way back on page 1.

Just to reiterate what has been said the site was perfect for us, liked the fresh flowers in the toilets, the scenery and locations John took us to were fantastic but most of all the company was GREAT. Good to sit and have a blether whilst cooking the tea or just around the fire later on. So what is the next venue for a long weekend and more importantly how long do we have to wait??????????????

Thanks again to everyone who was there.......... great time

TAKE IT NOBODY HAD A "CIGARETTE MOMENT" ON THE RETURN JOURNEY ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Will do the scribing bit later on if you all do not mind.

Not much I can add other than to amplify the fact that the company was superb and the weather fantastic. They always say that God shines on the righteous. ;) ;)

I eventually got away about 9:30 and was home by about 1:30, still hate that Loch Lomond road, will post the photo's later this week.

Thanks again Mr McEwan, next one please before the Scottish summer disappears :D :D

This is a bit of a struggle for dates as I having missed a few club events will need to get to as many as I can over the summer.

The club has no events in July so other than Billing the last weekend in July looks a possibility for a wee non club event when we might get good weather.

I am ruling out Sutherland as I think it would be to far and expensive for a weekend...my project for a week next July!!!

I have two places in mind and if people are intrested I will make further investigations re suitable camp site and possibility of an off road drive,as at my age I cant remember the names of the farmers who own the ground although they did let shooting to my mate in the eary 90s,as ever try and try again

There is a standing invite to any club member who wants a camp site. I'm a couple of miles away from the Callander trials site. Nice flat field, by the river. potable water on tap and a decent pub within walking distance...

Sorry to butt in but have been following your adventures, I agree that the north west highlands are stunning. We normally camp at The Sands at Gairloch and work our way up as the holiday progresses, the site in Scourie is excellent although "Auld Angus" is definitely old school with the site being all the better for his attention to detail and high standards. Watched him giving two French kids a talking too for riding push bikes dangerously, they couldn't understand a word but that didn't stop him, priceless to watch though. Always worth a hot chocolate at Cocoa Mountain in Durness (ideal for the chocoholics!) and you've never lived until you've done the ferry trip!(6 people's a squeeze) and the coach trip to the lighthouse at Cape Wrath. Davie the bus driver is superb, loved his witty comentary with coments like " the reason they chequer paint the buildings on the firing range is to stop the American pilots shooting them with friendly fire" a bit topical but the American tourists took it well, he didn't miss the Germans either!
It's a long journey and expensive with current fuel prices but start saving now as it'll be worth every penny hence this is why we're going back up this year again.

   cheers,
             Stevie.

Doug if you had been bitten by a tick it would still have its knashers in you until it was bloated with blood. Best double check ::).

Stevie I agree that Angus is strict but fair but you dont get any bother.I have only taken the ferry across the kyle once to fish the estuary from the other side, its a majic trip. The limestone lochs around Durness have the best brown trout in Scotland olso  the hardest to catch :(.

That said I am keeping next years proposed plan secret until I have sorted out a off road run and a site where we can enjoy a rough camp!

Stevie, Enjoy Durness if youre going that far north again. Balnakiel (17e) was my childhood home and Balnakiel Bay (with the 'haunted house' :) ) is the best beach in Scotland as far as im concerned. :)
They hadnt dug out Smoo cave when we lived up there (thats how long ago!!)

The top North west coast should be made a 'Scotlands National treasure'.........not that im biased or anything!! :) :)

Hi Mel,
your a lucky lady spending your childhood in such a lovely place, sometimes looks even more stunning in bad weather! Will be heading back up the first week in July for a few weeks, usual plan of working my way up and round at a leisurely pace. There's something in the atmosphere that relaxes you, you would make a mint if you could bottle it and sell it. We'll see how far the pennies stretch, might head back over to Orkney for a few days, bigger Land Rover means bigger fayres( breaking 20ft long with bike rack attached and just over 8ft high). Spending the next few weeks getting the big green one ready for the off with Carol cracking the whip (metaphorically speaking!) to get more of the camper conversion done before we leave, will try to post some pics when we get back if I manage to figure out how.

 cheers,
           Stevie.
