Faulty brake light switch?

I've also heard that putting it in reverse can cure it!

Sounds like you've had a visit from the 3 amigos. I guess it's a D2 you have. Need to get it plugged in to see what's what otherwise it's guessing I'm afraid

Had a similar problem with my lads car, it was a faulty abs wheel sensor, once swapped and re set it was ok.

Yes the brake lights still working

One of the guys on in the club put a tester on it first got a voltage error cleared that then got a brake light fault
Will try another one and see if it agrees

I bought a Freelander 1 earlier this year and trawled the forums.  As well as the obvious faults, there seemed to be other strange issues like a faulty abs pump that would bring the light on, a faulty abs ecu (part of the pump)  and a faulty instrument panel.

What was happening with mine was that the lights wouldn't be on, then without it moving they would come on and wouldn't go off again without disconnecting the battery, which seemed to reset the ecu.  I had another issue in that the odometer was reading in km and I couldn't get it back to miles - so it seemed the instrument panel was a good place to start  I had another car for breaking so I swapped over the instrument panel and the lights went out and have done so ever since.

A word of warning though, the instrument panel seems to store the mileage unlike the Disco's where it's stored in the BCU, so I've ended up with a slightly higher mileage reading than before (but still less than the km reading that I couldn't shift).

Replaced the brake light switch but now the brake lights don't work on a good note the traction control light and the HDR lights go out on start up but come back on after a few hundred yards

That's a shame.

There are half a dozen Freelander instrument panels on fleabay. You could try one of those.

Perhaps the new switch you fitted is faulty.
If the fault had stayed the same that would indicate the switch was ok and if the fault cleared that would mean the original switch was faulty.

Take the new switch back and say its not working.

Get some aerosol contact cleaner and make sure the connectors are all good.
