A new noise
« on: September 13, 2019, 07:38:00 PM »
Hi all, Friday the 13th - a new noise in my 97 Defender 90. Not a familiar whine/rattle I know in my vehicle
I can only describe it as a "hiss" somewhere forward below the dashboard/fusebox/tunnel area
Volume increases with road speed,
irrespective of engine speed
irrespective of in any gear or neutral, clutch up or down, under power or on liftoff overrun
but just louder as road speed increases

I've had gearbox chattering in neutral for a while, and clutch bites right at the bottom, but drives no problem otherwise
I could use a step for a hint here

Is it a turbo ? Look at pipe for leak or come off when u press accelerator does it get louder then disappear, if  when foot off ?  Or not turbo check exhaust pipe fir leaks hissing upon acceleration is gas escaping from it ?
